About the PR Card

The Permanent Resident (PR) Card is the official proof of your status as a permanent resident of Canada. It is a wallet-sized plastic card that serves as your primary travel document when re-entering Canada by commercial carrier.

PR cards are generally valid for five years, though in some cases they may be issued for one year. New permanent residents automatically receive their first PR card after completing the landing process in Canada — no separate application is needed for this first card.

It is important to note that the PR card is proof of status, not the status itself. Your permanent resident status is not tied to the validity of your PR card. Even if your card expires, you remain a permanent resident of Canada — but you will need a valid PR card to re-enter Canada if traveling by commercial vehicle (airplane, bus, train, or boat).

Renewal

PR Card Renewal

PR cards must be renewed before they expire if you plan to travel outside Canada and return by commercial carrier. The renewal process requires you to demonstrate that you have met the residency obligation.

To maintain your permanent resident status, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (two years) in every five-year period. This residency obligation is a key factor in PR card renewal applications.

The renewal application requires:

• A completed PR card renewal application form
• Your current PR card (if it has not expired)
• Copies of all passport pages from the previous five years
• Supporting documents to prove your physical presence (employment records, tax assessments, travel records, etc.)
• Two passport-sized photos that meet IRCC specifications
• Payment of the processing fee

If you have not met the residency obligation, there are limited exceptions and humanitarian and compassionate considerations that may apply. Our team can assess your situation and advise on the best approach for your renewal application.

Replacement

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Cards

If your PR card has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed, you should apply for a replacement card as soon as possible, especially if you have upcoming travel plans. The replacement process follows a similar path to the renewal process.

If your card has been lost or stolen, you should:

• Report the loss or theft to the police, particularly if you suspect the card may be used fraudulently
• If outside Canada, contact the nearest Canadian visa office to obtain a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) for re-entry
• Submit an application for a replacement PR card once back in Canada

For urgent travel needs, IRCC offers urgent processing in certain circumstances, provided you meet the criteria and can demonstrate the urgency. Supporting documentation such as flight itineraries, medical certificates, or proof of family emergencies may be required.
