Atlantic Immigration Program

The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is a federal immigration program designed to help employers in Canada's four Atlantic provinces hire foreign workers and recent international graduates for positions that have not been filled locally.

The program covers the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (PEI), and Newfoundland and Labrador. It replaced the Atlantic Immigration Pilot in early 2022, becoming a permanent immigration pathway.

Unlike many other immigration programs, the AIP is employer-driven, meaning you must have a valid job offer from a designated employer in one of the Atlantic provinces before you can apply. Employers must be designated by the provincial government to participate in the program.

The AIP offers a supportive settlement environment, with employers required to connect newcomers with settlement service providers who assist with housing, healthcare, and community integration.

Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Atlantic Immigration Program, candidates must meet specific requirements that vary depending on whether they apply as a skilled worker or an international graduate.

For Skilled Workers:

• At least one year of full-time work experience in the last five years (1560 hours)
• Work experience must be at NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 level
• A valid job offer from a designated Atlantic employer
• Language proficiency: CLB 5 for NOC TEER 0-3, or CLB 4 for NOC TEER 4
• At least a Canadian high school diploma or equivalent
• Proof of sufficient settlement funds (unless already working in Canada)

For International Graduates:

• A degree, diploma, or certificate from a publicly funded institution in an Atlantic province
• Full-time student status for at least two years
• Graduation within the last 24 months before applying
• A valid job offer from a designated Atlantic employer
• Language proficiency: CLB 5 for NOC TEER 0-3, or CLB 4 for NOC TEER 4
• No work experience requirement

Process

Application Process

The Atlantic Immigration Program follows a structured process designed to ensure a smooth transition for both employers and candidates. Here are the key steps:

1. Secure a Job Offer

   Find employment with a designated employer in one of the Atlantic provinces. The employer must demonstrate that the position could not be filled locally.

2. Obtain a Settlement Plan

   Work with a designated settlement service provider to create a personalized settlement plan that addresses your needs in the community.

3. Employer Endorsement

   The provincial government reviews and endorses the job offer, confirming that the requirements have been met.

4. Submit PR Application

   Once endorsed, submit your application for permanent residence to IRCC. You may also apply for a temporary work permit while your PR application is processed.

5. Settle in Atlantic Canada

   Upon approval, move to your designated community and begin working and settling in Atlantic Canada.
